The Relationship Between the Perceived Hope and Mental Health of Nursing Students

Abstract
|
|
|
This study was designed to identify the relationship between the perceived hope and mental health of nursing students.
The purposes of this study were as follows:
1. To explore the perceived hope and mental health of nursing students.
2. To test for significant difference in the perceived hope and mental health in relation to general characteristics.
3. To investigate the relationship between the perceived hope and mental health.
The subjects of this study were 174 nursing students. The data were collected during the period from April 4, to April 11, 1994. The instruments for this study were the Hope Scale developed by Lim¢¥s Questionnaire, based on Miller¢¥s Hope Scale and the simplified Mental Diagnostic Test developed by Prof. Hunku Lee.
The results of the study were follows:
1. The mean score for the perceived hope was 3.61.
2. The mean score for the level of mental health was 53.18.
3. General characteristics related to the degree of hope were significantly different in the type of religion (t= 2.6838, P < .05), home environment (F= 3.8220, P <.05), the degree of satisfaction in major subjects (t= 2.98, P <.05), and the degree of satisfaction in college life (t= 2.71, P <.05).
4. General characteristics related to the level of mental health were significantly different in the degree of major subjects (t= -2.01, P < .05) and the degree of satisfaction in college life (t= -2.82, P <.05).
5. The relationship between the perceived hope and mental health of nursing students was positively correlated (r= .5106, P <.001).
